Yellow Belts are typically process owners interested in using LSS methods to control and evolve a production process. In some cases, they are managers and executives that want a detailed understanding of LSS methods without getting into the technical details. The Yellow Belt role can be very effective within mature LSS organizations as the role for the majority of process owners and users. It is also a reasonable first step toward becoming a Black Belt as it gives a solid understanding of the methodology and value without some of the technical details redundant between Green and Black Belt training. Similar to Green Belt training, MSI Yellow Belt training places focus upon control phase methods and innovative ways to apply Dr. Shewhart’s techniques such as control charts in a transactional environment.
Yellow Belts should be line workers empowered to identify in process Quality issues and accountable for suggesting and participating in ongoing control, analysis, and improvement of the production process in which the Yellow Belt works. The Yellow Belt will typically use a prescribed set of analytic tools on in process products to discover issues and potentially out of control situations. The Yellow Belt will apply remediation and reporting processes to control defect flow through and collect data for tracking purposes. The Yellow Belt may also use data collected to suggest needed analysis or potential improvements.
